How to use the green screen
- Pick Chroma green or Pure green, or type any code into Hex.
- Set Brightness. Start lower than you think: a dimmer green keys more evenly.
- Under Markers, choose 4 corners or 9 points if the device or the camera will move.
- For a phone prop, switch on Lock touches in fullscreen.
- Press Fullscreen or F. Press Esc or ✕ to come back.
Use a monitor, tablet or phone as a chroma key backdrop
A screen makes a small, even backdrop that is ready in seconds.
Laptop or monitor
It works best behind small objects, hands and products. Keep the camera square to the screen, because many screens change color when you look at them from an angle. Matte screens reflect far less of your room than glossy ones.
Phone or tablet
For props and close-ups, show the green on the device itself and replace its screen in the edit. Download the 1080×1920 PNG for a portrait phone. On iPhone, show that image in Photos for green from edge to edge.
Screen replacement with tracking markers
When the device or the camera moves, a tracker needs fixed points to follow. 4 corners puts a plus sign near each corner, which is enough for a flat screen. 9 points adds the middle of each edge and the center, so tracking survives a thumb over one corner. Choose White markers on most greens and Black on pale ones. Keep fingers away from the markers, and paint them out after tracking. A locked-off shot of a still prop needs no markers at all.
Chroma key green vs pure green: which shade keys best
#00B140 (RGB 0, 177, 64) is the most quoted value for chroma key paint and fabric (FilmDaft), and it is the default here. #00FF00 is the strongest green a screen can display, and it is also the color OBS Studio keys when you choose Green (OBS Studio source code). Keyers sample the green in your actual footage, so an even, well-exposed backdrop matters more than the code. Start with Chroma green; if patches survive the key, try Pure green, and lower Brightness if the edges glow.

Each size has its job: 1920×1080 and 3840×2160 for 16:9 timelines, 1080×1920 for phones and vertical video, 1280×720 when a small file is enough, and 1080×1080 for square posts. Markers you switched on are baked into the image. Leave Apply brightness to the image off to keep the full color. The PNG is drawn on your device and never uploaded, and its file name carries the hex.
Keying it out in OBS, CapCut, Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve
The key itself happens in your editor, which is also where any “green screen remover” lives. In OBS Studio, add a Chroma Key filter to the camera or capture source and leave the key color on Green, or pick your exact shade. CapCut calls its tool Chroma key, Premiere Pro has the Ultra Key effect and DaVinci Resolve uses the 3D Keyer. While you record, a big online countdown timer or a flip clock makes a tidy overlay or “be right back” scene.

Options explained
Hex, the color picker and the eight swatches set the green; Copy hex copies the code. Brightness runs from 5 to 100 % and shows the dimmed hex. Markers and Marker color draw plus signs on screen and in the PNG. Lock touches in fullscreen is off by default. Soft glow in Settings darkens the edges, which helps light but not keying. Want colored light instead? Try the pink screen or the yellow screen.
How it works
The green is a plain CSS background, so it appears before any script has loaded. Brightness multiplies each color channel: #00B140 at 50 % is #005920. Markers sit 10 % in from the edges, with arms 4 % of the shorter side. A keyer removes every color close to the key color, which is why your subject must not contain the same green.
Tips and limits
- The screen is a light source too. Dim it and add distance so less green falls on your subject.
- Glossy screens show reflections of lamps and windows; angle them away.
- If dark bands roll through the green on camera, try another shutter speed, or raise the screen brightness and lower your exposure.
- Set white balance for your subject, not for the screen; a slightly blue-looking green still keys fine.
- A laptop is too small to key a whole person.
- On OLED phones, turn static markers off between takes, and plug in: full brightness drains the battery.
- For soft white light on a face, use the screen light.
FAQ
What is the green screen color code?
The most quoted chroma key green is #00B140, which is RGB 0, 177, 64; it opens here as Chroma green. Pure green #00FF00 is the strongest green a screen can show and the value OBS Studio keys as Green. Keyers sample your footage, so even light matters more than the code.
Why is green used instead of blue?
Green needs less light to key cleanly. Most camera sensors have twice as many green photosites as red or blue ones, so green records with less noise. Blue still works when a subject wears green, and in fact any color that doesn't appear in your subject can be keyed out.
Can I use my phone as a green screen for screen replacement?
Yes. Open this page on the phone, pick 4 corners under Markers, switch on Lock touches in fullscreen and press Fullscreen. Lower the brightness until the green doesn't glow. On iPhone, Safari keeps its bars, so download the 1080×1920 PNG and show it in Photos for an edge-to-edge green.
Do I need tracking markers?
Only when the device or the camera moves. A tracker needs fixed points to follow: use 4 corners for a flat screen and 9 points when fingers may cover some of them. For a locked-off shot of a still prop you can leave Markers set to Off and key the green on its own.
Can I download a green screen background image?
Yes. Choose a size, from 1280×720 up to 3840×2160 or the 1080×1920 portrait, and press Download PNG. The image is drawn on your device, nothing is uploaded, and the file name carries the exact hex, like green-screen-00B140-1920x1080.png. Markers you switched on are drawn into the file too.
Why is my green screen keying badly?
Usually one of six things: uneven light (lower the screen brightness), reflections (angle your lamps away), green spill on the edges (move the subject back), green in the subject itself (use another backdrop), sensor noise (add light on the subject) or rolling bands from screen flicker (try another shutter speed).
Can I use it as an OBS color source?
Yes. Choose Share and then Copy OBS link, and paste the link into a Browser Source. It shows the green and any markers, with no buttons or ads. For a plain color, the Color Source built into OBS Studio is simpler; this page helps when you want markers or an exact shade.
Can I use a green screen on Zoom or Teams?
Not well with a monitor. The background features in video-call apps expect a backdrop behind you that fills the frame, and a screen is too small and too bright for that. Use the app's own blur or virtual background, or hang green fabric behind you instead.
