How to use the 10 minute timer

  1. The page opens with 10:00 set. Press Start or Space.
  2. Optional: Add label offers Talk, Q&A, Discussion and Agenda item.
  3. Fullscreen (F) fills this screen; New window opens a copy for a second one.
  4. At 2:00 left the timer turns amber with a chime, and at 1:00 red with another.
  5. At zero a bell rings for 30 seconds: Stop alarm ends it, +1 min adds a minute, and Over by counts any overrun.
  6. Restart gives the next speaker the same ten minutes.

Ten-minute timeboxes: talks, agenda items and sprints

A 10 min timer suits any job with a fixed slot.

Talks and lightning talks

Rehearse with the 8 min chip to keep two minutes for questions; the warnings stay at 2:00 and 1:00. Treat amber as “start your conclusion” and red as “last sentence”, and keep the timer in its own window beside your slides. Silent colored lights and a speaker log are on the speech timer.

Agenda items and breakout discussions

Label it Discussion and put it on the room’s TV, so the group shares one clock. If everyone agrees, press +1 min.

Ten-minute sprints and practice sections

Write, clear your inbox or run one timed practice section. In a shared office, set Sound to Off; colors and captions still show where you are. For repeated focus blocks, the Pomodoro-style timer adds breaks.

Short workouts and chores

Show it on a TV or prop up a laptop for a short exercise circuit or a quick clean-up. For work and rest rounds, the interval timer fits better.

The 2-minute and 1-minute warnings

At 2:00 left the background turns amber (the whole screen in fullscreen), 2 min left appears and a chime plays; at 1:00 it turns red with 1 min left and a second chime. Ring ticks mark half-way, 2:00 and 1:00, and the idle summary reads “Warnings: amber at 2:00 · red at 1:00 · Change”.

Change opens Warnings in Settings: up to three rules of time, color and sound. Colors follow the time left, so they hold while paused and work with sound off. A typed 1:30 keeps only the red rule; a snooze after zero starts at 1:00, red, with no chime.

Put it on a projector, TV or second screen

Press F, or double-click the digits while it runs, to fill the screen; the controls fade after 3 seconds. On a computer with a screen at least 1,024 pixels wide, New window opens a synced copy for the projector; press F there. Either window can pause or add time, and only the first to reach zero rings.

A slideshow in front doesn’t stop the countdown, and the screen stays awake where the browser allows. The timer can’t sit inside a PowerPoint or Keynote slide; for a stream, Copy OBS link under Share gives an overlay of the label and digits. PowerPoint, Keynote and OBS Studio are trademarks of their owners; HugeTimer is not affiliated with them.

How the 10 minute timer stays accurate

Start stores an end time 600,000 milliseconds away; the display is that end time minus your device clock, rounded up: 10:00 for the first full second, 0:00 exactly when the bell is due. Amber starts as 2:00 appears (120,000 ms or less left), red as 1:00 appears. Chimes and bell are scheduled ahead on the audio clock, so slides in front can’t hold them back; after a sleep, the bell plays only within a minute of zero. See how our timers stay accurate.

Tips and limits

  • Press Test sound before the talk.
  • Plug in the laptop: sleep stops the page, and a locked phone may pause it.
  • With an extended display, New window puts the timer on the TV alone.
  • No music by design.
  • A game round with a cartoon fuse? Try the bomb timer.

FAQ

How do I set a 10 minute timer?

It's already set: press Start or Space and the 10 minute countdown begins. For a slightly different slot, tap a chip from 8 min to 20 min or click the digits and type 12m; the warnings stay at 2:00 and 1:00. For any other length, use the online timer.

What is a 10 minute timer good for?

A timer for 10 minutes counts down 600 seconds, a sixth of an hour: enough for a short talk, one agenda item, a breakout discussion, a writing sprint or a quick workout. This one adds an amber warning at 2 minutes, a red one at 1 minute and a bell at zero.

Can I get an alarm without music, or no sound at all?

Yes. There's no music here, only generated sounds: a bell at zero that rings for 30 seconds and a chime at each warning. Choose another alarm under Sound, or Off, or press M to mute. Without sound, the amber and red colors, the captions and the flash at zero still show.

Will it ring if I switch to my slides?

Yes, as long as the browser stays open and the computer stays awake. The end time is fixed when you press Start, and the chimes and bell are scheduled ahead on the audio clock, so a slideshow in front doesn't delay them. Plug the laptop in and keep it from sleeping.

Can I add a minute while it runs?

Yes. Press +1 min or + while the timer runs or is paused, and −1 min or − to take one away; it never drops below 0:01. A warning re-arms when the time climbs back above it. After zero, +1 min stops the bell and runs one more minute, already red.

How do I turn the warnings off or change them?

Press Change in the summary under the ring, or open Settings → Warnings. Each rule has a time, a color (no color, amber or red) and a sound, and you can keep up to three. Delete both for a plain countdown, or add one at 5:00 for a longer session.

What is the loudest alarm sound?

There's no fixed answer: how loud an alarm sounds depends on your speakers and device volume, and no web page can go above that. Compare the sounds with Test sound in Settings at the level you'll use; Volume starts at 70 of 100. For a large room, connect an external speaker.
