How to use the boxing round timer

  1. Pick a preset (Pro is selected) or open Round settings to type a Round length, Rest and Rounds.
  2. Press Test bell to hear the bell and set the volume.
  3. Press Start. A 10-second get-ready runs first, then one bell starts each round and three bells end it.
  4. Thirty seconds before the end, a clapper knocks three times and the screen turns amber.

Space pauses and resumes, L locks the screen, and F goes fullscreen.

Presets: pro, amateur, 2-minute, MMA, bag work

Preset Round Rest Rounds Total
Pro 3:00 1:00 12 47:10
Amateur 3:00 1:00 3 11:10
2-min 2:00 1:00 10 29:10
MMA 5:00 1:00 3 17:10
Bag work 3:00 0:30 6 20:40

Totals include the 10-second get-ready. Olympic-style bouts under the World Boxing Competition Rules (February 2024) are 3 rounds of 3 minutes with 1 minute of rest. Men’s professional title fights are usually 12 rounds of 3 minutes, and women’s title fights 10 rounds or fewer of 2 minutes (Wikipedia: The distance). MMA uses 5-minute rounds with 1 minute of rest under the unified rules of MMA (revised July 2024). Bag work is a training choice, not a rule. The same page works as an interval timer for any round sport.

Bell, clapper and colors

One strike of the bell means the round starts; three strikes mean it ends. At the warning, a clapper knocks three times: 30 seconds before the end by default. World Boxing rules give a signal 10 seconds before the end of each round, so choose 10 s for that feel. The screen is red with ROUND 3 during a round, amber with LAST 30 S in the warning window and green with REST between rounds, where it also shows “Next: Round 4 of 12”.

On a phone, laptop or gym TV

Press Fullscreen to fill the screen; in landscape the round number sits on the left and the time on the right. While the timer runs, it asks the device to keep the screen awake where the browser supports it. A laptop connected to a TV over HDMI turns it into a boxing timer clock for the whole gym. Lock stops glove taps from pausing a round: taps do nothing until you hold the lock button for one second.

A background timer that keeps counting

On a computer, the bells ring on time while music or notes are in front, because they are scheduled ahead on the audio clock. A browser saving memory may unload a tab that stayed hidden for a long time; when you return, the right round is restored. Phones are stricter: a locked screen or another app in front stops web pages, so keep the page open with the screen on. If a phone did stop the page, the timer shows the correct round when you come back and offers to go back to where you were.

Options explained

  • Round length, Rest and Rounds: set by the presets, or type your own.
  • Warning before round end: Off, 10 s, 15 s or 30 s (default).
  • Get ready: 0:10 by default, up to 5:00.
  • Countdown beeps: Off by default; 3-2-1 adds pips before each change.
  • Voice cues: off by default; says “Round 3 of 12” or “Last round” with an offline voice.

How it works

Your rounds become a timeline of start times, and the timer reads its position from your device clock instead of counting ticks. There are no audio files: the bell, clapper and pips are generated in the browser. More detail: how our timers stay accurate. For drills timed by feel, use a stopwatch; for a 10-minute skipping block, the 10 minute timer.

FAQ

How long is a boxing round?

Commonly 3 minutes. Olympic-style bouts under World Boxing rules are three rounds of 3 minutes, men's professional title fights usually run 12 rounds of 3 minutes, and women's professional title fights use 2-minute rounds. Rules vary by organization, so check yours; this timer accepts any length from 0:01 to 60:00.

How long is the rest between rounds?

One minute under World Boxing rules and the unified rules for MMA, which is why every preset except Bag work uses 1:00. Bag work rests for 0:30. You can type any rest from 0:00 to 60:00 in Round settings; with 0:00 the rounds run back to back.

What is the 30-second warning?

Thirty seconds before each round ends, a wooden clapper knocks three times and the screen turns amber with the tag "LAST 30 S", so you know it is time to empty the tank. Choose 10 s, 15 s or Off under Warning before round end.

Can I set 2-minute or 5-minute rounds?

Yes. 2-min gives ten 2-minute rounds with 1:00 of rest, and MMA gives three 5-minute rounds with 1:00 of rest. For anything else, open Round settings and type a Round length from 0:01 to 60:00; the preset row then shows Custom.

Does the boxing timer keep running in a background tab?

On a computer, yes: the bells ring on time while another tab or app is in front, because they are booked ahead on the audio clock. On phones, a locked screen or another app pauses web pages; when you come back, the timer shows the right round and offers to go back.

Can I use it for kickboxing, MMA or bag work?

Yes. The MMA and Bag work presets cover two common setups, and any round length, rest and number of rounds works for kickboxing, Muay Thai, pads or circuit-style conditioning. The bell, clapper and colors stay the same whatever you choose.

Is this boxing timer free? Do I need an app?

It is free, with no account and nothing to install. It runs online in any modern browser on a phone, laptop or TV, and keeps working without a connection once the page has loaded. Your rounds and settings stay in this browser.
