How to use the 5 minute timer
- The timer is set for 5 minutes. Press Start or Space.
- Optional: Add label suggests Break, Stand-up, Tidy-up and Check-in.
- Read the bold Ends at time, or press Copy end time for a chat message.
- A minute before the end, a soft chime plays and 1 min left appears.
- At zero the alarm starts quietly and grows louder for 20 seconds: Stop alarm ends it, +1 min gives you longer, and Over by shows how late you are.
What fits in five minutes
A short break between meetings or tasks
Stand up, refill your water or look away from the screen. You know when to be back before you leave, and the alarm begins at a fifth of its volume, so it won’t jolt a quiet office. For planned breaks across a morning, the Pomodoro-style timer runs the cycle.
Stand-ups and quick check-ins
Show the round on the meeting-room TV labeled Stand-up: everyone sees the time left and the end time, the heads-up means “last update”, and +1 min buys extra. For one slot per person, use the 1 minute timer; for club-style speeches, a speech timer with colored lights.
Workshop breaks on the projector
Label the timer Break and press F: the projector shows the countdown, the heads-up and a large Ends at 10:47, so nobody asks when to come back. Keep it in a window beside your PowerPoint deck, not inside a slide (PowerPoint is a trademark of its owner; HugeTimer is not affiliated with it).
A five-minute tidy or reset
Clear a desk, wipe a counter or empty an inbox; if five minutes doesn’t fit, the chips cover 3 to 7. Watching a pot of tea too? The kitchen timer runs several named timers.
The one-minute heads-up
At 1:00 left the timer plays one Soft chime at full level and shows 1 min left until zero, and a tick on the ring marks the spot. Screen readers hear “1 minute left”. The color stays the same on purpose: the end of a break shouldn’t look like an emergency. Settings → Warnings lets you move it, make it amber or red, swap the sound or delete it. Timers of one minute or less skip it.
Ends at: know when the break is over
Before you start, the line under the ring reads “Start now → ends at 10:47” and keeps up with the clock. Running, it turns into a bold Ends at 10:47, in fullscreen too; paused, it says Paused, and resuming sets a new end. That’s the minute a wall clock will show when the alarm starts, in your browser’s time format (10:47 or 10:47 AM).
Copy end time copies “Break ends at 10:47”, or “5-minute timer ends at 10:47” without a label. A shared link can’t start everyone’s timer at once, so share the end time instead.

How the 5 minute timer works
Start records an end time 300,000 milliseconds ahead, and every update subtracts your device clock from it, rounded up: 5:00 for the first full second, 0:00 at the moment the alarm is due. The heads-up fires as 1:00 appears. The Soft ring climbs from 20 % to full volume over 20 seconds and lasts 30. Sounds are booked ahead on the audio clock, so a hidden tab can’t hold them back; after sleep, the alarm plays only if under a minute late. More: how our timers stay accurate.

FAQ
How do I start a 5 minute countdown?
Press Start or Space: the page opens with 5:00 set. If you've changed it, tap the 5 min chip, or click the digits, type 5m and press Enter. Before you start, the line under the ring shows when a break begun now would end. It's free, with no sign-up.
What is a 5 minute timer good for?
A 5 minute timer counts down 300 seconds, which suits a short break, a stand-up round, a workshop pause or a quick desk reset. This one adds what a break needs: a soft heads-up a minute before the end and the clock time when the break is over.
Can I get a warning one minute before the end?
Yes, it's on by default. At 1:00 left one Soft chime plays and 1 min left appears under the digits, without a change of color. In Settings → Warnings you can move it, make it amber or red, change its sound or delete it, and keep up to three.
Is there a louder alarm, or a silent one?
Yes to both. The default Soft alarm starts quietly and reaches full volume after 20 seconds, while Beep, Digital, Buzzer and the others start at full level; Test sound lets you compare. For silence, choose Off under Sound or press M, and the caption and flash still show. There's no music.
Can I make it 3, 4, 6 or 7 minutes?
Yes. The chips run from 3 min to 7 min, so a 3 minute timer is one tap away; a chip sets the time without starting it. For other lengths, click the digits and type, for example 2m or 4:30. The heads-up stays at 1:00 left, and the online timer takes any length.
Does the timer keep going if my screen locks?
If only the display turns off while the computer stays awake, yes: the end time is saved and the alarm is lined up in advance. A sleeping computer or a locked phone can pause the page; on waking, it shows the right time and rings only if under a minute late. Keep screen on helps.
Can I share a 5 minute timer with my team?
Yes. Share → Copy link makes a link with the same length, label and sound; each person opens it and presses Start on their own device. Nothing syncs through a server, so for a group break it's simpler to press Copy end time and paste “Break ends at 10:47” into the chat.
